Use Nouns and Verbs When Writing for Facebook
A month ago or so I decided to raid my parents library and took home a couple of dusty, weathered books written awhile back by William Strunk, Jr. and E.B. White titled The Elements of Style and The Elements of Grammar. Although we have surpassed the cutting-edge technology of the primitive word processor recommended by the authors, many of the writing rules remain true today. Today I just checked in on one of my favorite social media scientists Dan Zarella and his advice on posting style mirrored those written long ago.
“Write with nouns and verbs, not with adjectives and adverbs. The adjective hasn’t been built that can pull a weak or inaccurate noun out of a tight place… it is nouns and verbs, not their assistants, that give good writing its toughness and color.” The Elements of Style
In Zarella’s study of the relationship between parts of speech and Facebook sharing, he found that William Strunk, Jr. and E.B. White were right in that the adjectives and adverbs don’t perform as well as nouns and verbs. Above is a chart from his website.
So remember, when posting on Facebook, mind your Nouns and Verbs.
