Cal Poly Hosts Fourth Annual Ballroom DanceSport Competition
Featuring World Renowned Latin Dancer
SAN LUIS OBISPO (January 18, 2011) - The Cal Poly DanceSport Team will host its
fourth annual Mustang Ball, a ballroom and Latin DanceSport competition, on
Saturday, Feb 5, 2011 from noon to 10pm in Cal Poly's Chumash Auditorium. More
than 15 collegiate teams and DanceSport athletes from all over California have been
invited to compete at what is one of the largest annual dance competitions in San
Luis Obispo county.
The Mustang Ball will include the talents of both local and visiting DanceSport
athletes in the International and American Style Ballroom Dances. There are also
events for nightclub dances such as Salsa, Hustle, Argentine Tango, and Lindy Hop
Swing, as well as a formation team competition, collegiate team match, and other
special performances. Additionally, an award of $500 in scholarships will be given to
each of the winning couples in six different levels of competition, ranging from
newcomer to the highest "open-level" competitors.
The competition will conclude with an exciting dance by world-renowned champion Latin dancer, Steve Vasco and his partner Joanna.
Mr. Vasco was a finalist in the United States Professional Rhythm category, and the winner of the most prestigious Salsa Competition in
the world, which is held at the stunning Club Mayan in Los Angeles where he was crowned “Hottest Salsa Dancer.” Mr. Vasco has also
choreographed for TV shows, including “Dancing with the Stars” and “So You Think You Can Dance,” and he was the choreographer and
Principal Dancer for Christopher Caliendo’s “Tango Americano” and the film “Dance with Me”. "I’m excited to be a part of this year’s
Mustang Ball, and am especially looking forward to seeing the local talent on the Central Coast,” commented Mr. Vasco.
The Cal Poly DanceSport Team is building on the success of their previous three competitions to what is expected to be the largest
competition to date. "There's an impressive amount of talented dancers scattered within our local community," says Christopher Ellwood,
founder of the Cal Poly DanceSport Team. "The Mustang Ball competition is unique in that it unifies all of the different styles of dance in
one event. This event is very close to my heart and I'm grateful for the growing success and all the community support that we have
received thus far."
Amateur dancers of all levels and ages are invited to sign up to compete. Online registration by January 22nd is strongly encouraged.
Spectators are encouraged to attend and watch the event. The cost of admission is $5.00 in advance and $8.00 at the door. Front row VIP
seating is available at an additional cost. Cal Poly students with a valid ID get in free. Donations to help support this non-profit event are
always greatly appreciated. For more information on the competition, please see http://www.cpdancesport.org/comp/ or call (805) 627-
